The Umbrella Revolution
The Umbrella Revolution or Umbrella Movement was born from the 2014 Hong Kong protests against proposed reforms to the electoral system. A campaign of civil disobedience through sit-in street protests was led by students critical of the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) decision to vet candidates for the Chief Executive of Hong Kong. The largely peaceful protests were marked by occasional clashes with police, pro-Beijing counter-protestors, triads, and thugs. Umbrellas were used as a tool for passive resistance from police capsicum spray and tear gas. At its peak, over 100,000 students occupied central locations in Mong Kok, Causeway Bay, Admiralty, and Tsim Sha Tsui.
